Prestec have successfully completed a major refurbishment of the Marina Leisure and Fitness Centre in Great Yarmouth, a unique beach walk-in entry, with a six lane 25 metre swimming pool.
Prestec were contracted to provide chloride protection of the pool and retaining walls. The works included a complete Flexcrete repair and protection system applied to the retaining walls, as very high chloride levels were found as a result of overflow from the perimeter scum drainage channels and chloride laden water penetrating into the unprotected concrete causing severe corrosion.
Steel Reinforcement Protector 841 was applied to the rebars to provide a corrosion preventative coating and the concrete was built back to profile with a high performance waterproof repair mortar.
Lastly, Cementitous Coating 851 was applied to vulnerable surfaces to provide a permanent barrier to future chloride ingress, which will resist chloride penetration for at least 26 years.
The refurbishment was carried out over the Christmas period and the pool was closed for a limited period and therefore was essential that the repair and protection work could be undertaken quickly and safely, which Prestec successfully managed.
