Prestec introduced an Apprenticeship Programme in 2012 that combines learning at college with on-site experience to ensure the apprentice develops the right mix of technical and practical skills.
The first person to benefit from the scheme was Christopher, a young man who was attending sixth form but was not enjoying it. He was unsure of his career path and wanted to explore other options. His uncle, Gary, worked for Prestec and, as Christopher had always shown a keen interest in construction, asked if they could take him on as a labourer.
Prestec went one better. They invited Christopher to join their new CITB-funded Apprenticeship programme as the very first attendee. As part of the programme, Christopher was required to complete his NVQ Level 2 at Walsall College, on a day release basis, spending one day a week at college.
Christopher works within the Damp & Timber part of the business carrying out works at residential properties. When asked what he enjoyed most about his job he replied, “I enjoy the demolition side, preparing the walls with a hammer drill ready for plastering, it has also been good visiting different locations within the UK which I wouldn’t have seen if I hadn’t been working for Prestec”. He describes himself as an active team player that has always enjoyed sports. Hard working, motivated and punctual, Christopher fits in well with the rest of the Prestec team. He describes the most difficult task he has undertaken so far as being a recent job in Portsmouth, where the team was required to fire-proof the underside of concrete floors in a hospital. Christopher describes the task as “difficult but the outcome rewarding”.
Commenting on his choice of career, Christopher says: “You need to be punctual, hard working and it’s important to be physically fit, as it’s a very demanding job. A thirst for knowledge is key too, as the job consists of a wide range of different materials and methods.” Describing his job in three words, he says: “enjoyable, physical and rewarding”.
Christopher completed his NVQ Level 2 at Walsall College in 2014 and the college was so impressed with his attitude and ability, he was immediately asked to complete Level 3. His tutor comments: “From day one of his Apprenticeship programme, I found Christopher to be committed, dedicated and motivated. He has the right approach and attitude, and is a role model to other apprentices. All his College progress reviews have been positive, with good feedback from his company and tutors. He is passionate and once he successfully completes his Level 3, I would like him to develop further, succeed in his career and make his company proud. He certainly has the ability.”
